Department History

Date of Establishment : 29th Feb 2008

Physiotherapy is a branch of health science that deals with prevention and restoration of movement related problems using non –drug approach. The genesis of modern Physiotherapy is a post world war phenomenon. The wartime experience of medical teams involved in care of injured soldiers and the polio epidemic during  1940s, primarily contributed to the medical use and acceptance of Physiotherapy practice. It was realised by the core medical experts that the Physiotherapy has the potential to add to the benefit of patients, which cannot be achieved by drugs or surgery alone. Several Physiotherapy schools were started and physiotherapists got a professional status within the modern healthcare system.

The primary role of Physiotherapy is the prevention and correction of locomotor disability. It works towards keeping the mobility power of an individual intact. Several disease / injuries  have potential to make a person locomotor disabled. In these conditions along with the medical/surgical treatment Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in the functional restoration of the patients. The government of India's national policy on the prevention of disability recognizes the physiotherapist as core member of the team involved in the prevention and management of locomotor disability.

Department of Physiotherapy is the youngest department of Faculty of Medicine.  Department runs two regular courses i.e Bachelor of physiotherapy (BPT) and Masters of Physiotherapy (MPT).  This department is one among those few university departments in India that offers PhD course in physiotherapy.

The mission of the department is to create human resources for all levels of physiotherapy practice who proficiently execute the task of clinical service delivery, education, planning & administration   and research in accordance with the health requirements of the nation
