Department Introduction

Hindi is national and official languages of India and thus it has very important place in acdemic plannning of University system. Almost every university in the country has established Hindi department. In the same pattern Punjabi University also established Hindi department in year 1972. The Department started with Post-Graduate teaching & research having M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. Later on M.Phil course was started in 1976, which was closed in 1993 with the University decision of closing M.Phil course in all departments.  M.Phil. classes will begin again from session 2004-05.

  • About 100 students got Ph.D. degree.
  • About 25 students are registered for Ph.D. degree.

1.   m.a.  Hindi (2 years)                                                                                                       Student Intake:  70

              Pre-requisite: B.A. with Hindi or Prabhakar.

2.   P.G. Diploma in Hindi Journalism (1 year)                                                          Student Intake:  40

          Pre-requisite: B.A. with Hindi Literature

3.   P.G. Diploma in Translation (1 year)                                                                       Student Intake:  40

        (Hindi to English & English to Hindi and Hindi to Punjabi)       

        Pre-requisite: B.A. with 50% Marks


4.   Elementary Course in Hindi (Six Months)  

          (For Foreign Students pursuing Ph.D.)


5.   Diploma course in Hindi (One Year, Semester System)

         (For Foreign Students pursuing Ph.D.)





  • M. A.
    B.A. with 50% marks.
  • M.Phil.
    M.A. Hindi with minimum of 50% marks, also 50% marks at B.A. Level.
  • Ph.D.
    Post-Graduate marks plus percentage of under graduate degree marks not less than 105. Provdided candidate has got atleast 50% marks both at the Postgraduate and under graduate levels.

 MA-I (Total eight Papers in two semesters)
 MA-II ( Total Eight papers in two semesters)
 M.Phil ( Total four papers plus dissertation in three semesters)
