Department of Punjab  Historical Studies

Date of Establishment of the Department.   16 SEPT,1963.

            The Department of Punjab Historical Studies is one of  the founder departments of Punjabi University. The Department of Punjab Historical Studies was specially instituted with the object of promoting researches in the History of Punjab along with emphasis on the heritage and cultural evolution of this region.

            Dr. Ganda Singh, the doyen of Sikh historians took over as the Founder Director of the Department in September, 1963. From the year 1963 till the present time, the Department has moved from strength to strength .

            The Department initiated the Punjab History Conference in 1965. The Punjab History Conference is an annual  feature of this Department and it is being conducted regularly ever since with total number of delegates increasing with every passing session. Sita Ram Kohli Memorial lecture, Dr.Ganda Singh Memorial Lecture and Sirdar Kapur Singh Memorial Lecture are also annual features of the Department

            The Department deserves the  credit for setting up a separate 'Oral History Cell'  in 1973, where the statements of eminent freedom fighters, and persons of repute are recorded and kept in the departmental library to be used by younger generations as a source of History.

            The Department could boast of a well stocked library of its own, independent of the main library. It houses 5939 books and 45 rare manuscripts pertaining to Punjab History

* AROUND 80 BOOKS HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED BY THE DEPARTMENT ON DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF THE HISTORY OF PUNJAB.

* Rare Manuscripts : 45 (Digitized)

* Archival materials related to the recent events and movements: Ghadar Movement, Jaito Morcha, Praja Mandal Movement, States of Patiala and Nabha, Partition of the Punjab and Punjabi Suba Movement.

* Reproductions of rare paintings from the eighteenth century onwards.

* Rare photographs related to the Kuka Movement, Ghadhar Movement, the Jallianwala Bagh, the Guru Ka Bagh, Jaito Morchas and the Partition.

* Rare Books : 118

* Oral Evidence collected from over 400 persons about recent events and movements

* Special Collections : Prem Singh Hoti, Mehar Singh Rawel and Barkat Rai Chopra

* Collections of the former Directors of the Department, Dr. Ganda Singh, Dr. Fauja Singh and Dr. Kirpal Singh, have been housed in the Central Library because of shortage of space.

 

            'The Panjab Past and Present', bi-annual journal was also started by Dr. Ganda Singh in 1967 and continues to be published till date.
