The Punjabi University, Patiala was established on April 30, 1962 for the development of Punjabi language, literature, art, and culture. The Department of Punjabi Literary Studies was established on 13.04.1967 under the Chairmanship of Professor of Eminence Dr. Atar Singh. It is the only Department of its kind in the whole of the country exclusively devoted to the research on Punjabi literature.

The goal of Punjabi Literary Studies Department is to promote Punjabi literature and language by providing a scholastic vision of Punjabi literature through its prestigious research work. The main activity of this Department is to produce reference books on Punjabi Literature. These include glossaries, encyclopaedias, dictionaries, and books on History of Punjabi literature, Punjabi literary criticism, translations, and monographs on eminent scholars and writers. The Department also brings out a bi-annual research journal titled Khoj Patrika. The Department has made its mark in research in all fields of Punjabi literary genres like Poetry, Drama, Fiction, Biographies, Pen-sketches, and Travelogues. The Department has also engaged in editing of great scholarly works.

There are Eight teachers in the Department (3 Professor, 5 Assistant Professors). All sanctioned posts are filled on regular basis . All of the teachers have Ph.D. degree, four of them having M.Phil. degree as well. Six of the teachers have qualified NET/SLET examination. Two teachers were awarded JRF by the U.G.C. All teachers are involved in research. They have published individually about 47 books and 223 research papers, presented 69 papers at various national and international Conferences and have edited more than 28 issues of Departmental bi-annual research journal Khoj Patrika. 48 students are registered with them under the Ph.D. programme. The Department has organised three national level seminars & a five day workshop on Punjabi Sahit Vishav Kosh during the recent years. Presently the Department faculty is working on Punjabi Sahit Vishav Kosh Vol.-II project. Recently department has organised four International Conferences (Vishav Punjabi Sahit Conference) and published its proceedings as well.

The Department has organised various programmes of interaction with the eminent punjabi writers and has also organised several book exhibitions of departmental publications on special occasions.

The Department has so far produced 392 titles, which itself is a proof of the dynamic nature of the Department.

The Department has also carried out two other major research projects: Sri Guru Granth Sahib De Sandharbh Vich Tatkaaleen Dharmaan Da Tulnaatmak Adhian-Samaantaavaan Te Sikh Dharam Di Vilakhanta and Punjabi Ghazal Da Kaav Shaastar. These two projects (totalling Rs. 14,23,600/-) were funded by the UGC.

Major Achievements of the Department

1. Publication of 392 (Three hundred & ninety two) titles under various series including 11 dictionaries and 72 issues of bi-annual research journal Khoj Patrika.
2. 176 research projects are in progress.
3. Organised Four International Conferences (Vishav Punjabi Sahit Conference)
4. Regular publication of bi-annual research journal Khoj Patrika for the last forty five years.
5. Sahitya Academy Award to the Departmental Publication for the best translation work, for the translation of Bharat Muni's classical work Natya Shastra by Dr. Rajguru.

In future, first priority will be given to the early completion of the
ongoing projects. The Department is also focussing on starting new projects under various series, such as Anthology of Punjabi Poetry of Twentieth Century, Pakistani Punjabi Sahit Te Lekhak, Parvasi Punjabi Sahit Te Lekhak, Sanskrit Natak Ate Rang Manch, Adhunik Bharati Natak Te Rang Manch and Sahit Alochana De Naven Jhuka etc. Various seminars and workshops concerning these projects are also planned. Department has already started a new series titled Vishav Chintak which is to bring out the contributions of Indian scholars to the world intellectual heritage. Books on Rabinder Nath Tagore and Shankracharya are already published under this series.
The Department is committed to work intensively for the development of Punjabi literary studies.
