Department History

Date of Establishment of the Department:  December 27, 1967

The foundation stone of the department was laid by the then Hon'ble President of India Dr. Zakir Hussein on 27th December 1967.

The establishment of Guru Gobind Singh Department of Religious Studies at the Punjabi University in 1969 was a unique and significant venture in the history of the higher education in India. It was in the year of the Tenth Master Guru Gobind Singh's birth tercentenary that plans were drawn to institute the Department which received the willing approval of UGC as also of the Punjab Government.  The main objectives were: to provide facilities for advanced research, understanding of world religions, systematic and scientific study through academic channels such as inter-religious dialogues, seminars, extension lectures and publications of books etc. The department offers educational courses in the field of Religious Studies.

Apart from imparting instructions at the post-graduate level, M. Phil. course work, research is carried out leading to Ph.D. Degree, Seminars, Symposia and Conferences memorial lectures, other lecture series by the experts are regular features of the Department.

1.   M.A. Religious Studies (2 years)                                                                                    Student Intake:  25

Pre-requisite:  Graduation in any Faculty with 45% Marks.

      Career Options: Teaching, Research.


2.   M.A. Sikh Studies (2 years)                                                                                               Student Intake:  25

Pre-requisite:  Graduation in any Faculty with 45% Marks.

      Career Options: Teaching, Research, Preaching.


3.   M.A. Buddhist Studies (2 years)                                                                                      Student Intake:  25

Pre-requisite:  Graduation in any Faculty with 50% Marks.


4.   Certificate Course in Pali (One Year)                                                                           Student Intake:  15

Pre-requisite:  10+2 with 50% marks.+


5.   Add-on Certificate Course in Dharam Granths of World Religions


Note: IELTS or TOEFL test is compulsory for foreign Students.




The Department provides scholarships to needy and deserving students based on merit. Provision of scholarships from Endowment BODIES is also for research students. 5 Students of every batch of M.Phil, % Students of every Batch of M.A. Sikh Studies Students are given scholarship by SGPC, Amirtsar.


The Department is enriched with a well equipped library covering the essence of philosophies of the religions of the world. To enhance the modern outlook of the department, computers are installed within the premises attached with Internet and Ethernet connections for every faculty member and research scholars. Research cabins and other related facilities were made available to the scholars and researchers. A.C. hall if the Department is used for departmental activities such as Seminars, Religious Discourses, Prayers, Discussions, Workshops, etc.
