Introduction

 The University School of Applied Management (USAM) offers innovative industry integrated programmes to meet the needs of modern day business, service sector and manufacturing industry. The focus of five year integrated MBA is to prepare the students for an alternate career in business and industry of the 21st century. The main features of the programme is concentration on the sectoral areas like banking and insurance, financial markets, digital marketing, retail marketing, accounting, leadership and corporate enterpreneurship etc. The programme makes a difference in terms of skill development of the students, teaching pedagogy and evaluation pattern with main focus on continuous evaluation of the students. There is a provision of workshops on soft skills, personality development, communication skills, development of presentation skills of the students and also to emphasis on various interdisciplinary  subjects  like democracy governance, world history in 21st century and fundamentals of sociology to prepare them for the new age jobs of the present day global and domestic business.

NSE Collaboration with USAM

        The  department has collaborated with National Stock Exchange of India Limited to offer unique MBA (Financial Markets) FYIC programme which is a unique course linking academics with industry. The students of this programme have to study the management courses as well as National certifications in Financial Markets modules and NISM modules. The students get an opportunity to have eight NCFM certifications of NSE upto graduation level and in total more than fifteen NCFM & NISM certifications during whole course of MBA (Financial Markets). The students of MBA (Financial Markets) FYIC and MBA (Applied Management) FYIC have an option to exit the course after having attained graduation degree.  Various modules taught under it are:

Department has also taken initiatives by collaborating with state bank of Patiala whereby research projects have been assigned to the department students to resolve some very crucial problems. These projects include resolving the problem of non performing assets of the SBOP and managing service quality of the bank to provide best financial services. Besides this there are some unique features of USAM that include:

      The programme is making a difference in terms of skill development of the students, teaching pedagogy and evaluation pattern with main focus on continuous evaluation of the students.

Dr. Ritu Lehal (M.Com, M.Phil, Ph.D.) is presently Professor in University School of Applied Management at Punjabi University, Patiala (INDIA). She has 25 years of teaching and research experience at University level. She has more than 40 Research Papers to her credit in various referred journals including, Vinimaya, Business Analyst, South Journal of Management, NICE, Journal of Management etc. She completed a major Research Project titled, "A Comparative Study of Organisational Climate, Organisational Role Stress, Quality of worklife, Job Satisfaction and Managerial Effectiveness in Men and Women Executive in Punjab" in the year 2004, funded by AICTE. In 2008, completed another major Research Project titled, "Dynamics of Job Satisfaction in Female Teachers in Higher Education - A Study of Punjab and Chandigarh, funded by UGC. She has organised various seminars and conferences at national level, presented more than 10 papers in various seminars conferences. In 2010, her book titled, "People management in life Insurance corporation of India Recruitment and selection, Training and Development, Performance Appraisal," was published by LAMBERT Academic Publishing, Germany. She worked as Senior Warden, as additional charge, for all the six girls hostels for six years, from 2001-2007. She is presently a member of 'Women Cell' of the University for last 10 years. She has attended SAM and TOT workshops related to sensitization of women teachers in higher education. She has attended Soft Skill and Personality Development workshops organised by Infosys. She has takenover additional charge of Director, Women’s Study Centre from 1st January 2015. Under her directorship as a part of the social responsibility of educational institutions, WSC has adopted the village ‘Akalgarh’ to make it a model village in coming years. Dr Manjit Singh is presently working as Professor & Head in the University School of Applied Management and has 21 years of teaching experience in the field of Management and Commerce education at the university level. He has 65 research publications to his credit in the national and international journals. He has got an opportunity to work with foreign universities on a UNDP assignment for more than two years (2002-2004) and has served as Head of the Department at Kigali Institute of Science, Technology and Management, RWANDA. He was actively involved in Teaching, Research and Training at the international level. He has attended programs of UNESCO (Paris) on University Enterprise Management and has also attended a program on ‘Competitiveness and Strategy based on Harvard Business School case studies conducted by ‘Onthefrontier’ (USA). He has been associated with Curtin University of Technology, Australia as course facilitator for the Accounting and Finance courses. He has also been associated with Infosys for the Campus Connect program as soft skills trainer for B. Tech. and MCA students. He has participated and presented papers in more than 40 national and international seminars/conferences and has acted as Resource Person in various orientation and refresher courses conducted by various Universities in the region. Dr. Kapil Sharma is working as an Assistant Professor in this university from August 2006. He worked at USBS, Talwandi Sabo till March, 2011 and then joined as a faculty member in the department of University School of Applied Management in June 2011. He completed his doctorate in 2011 and was awarded the degree of Ph.D. in February 2012. He has attended few seminars, workshops and an orientation course, and has presented and published few papers in the various conferences and journals. Dr.Sarang Narula is presently working as Assistant Professor in the University School of Applied Management. He has done his bachelor’s in Commerce from Punjabi University and Masters in Management from University of Pune. He has a total of nearly thirteen year experience which includes both of Industry and Teaching. He has worked for around six years in several organization which include best of Telecom & Insurance sector after having a stint in industry he has joined Punjabi University as Assistant Professor in Management and has been teaching both post graduate and under graduate classes since past ten years. He has attended as well as presented research paper at various National and International conferences. Currently few candidates are pursuing research under his guidance. Dr Nidhi Walia is working as Assistant Professor in University school of Applied Management. She has done MBA(Finance), M.Com and Ph.D from Thapar University, Patiala. She has also qualified UGC- NET exam in management. She has total fourteen year of teaching experience in the area of accounting and finance. Before Joining USAM, she has worked with Thapar University Patiala and Punjabi University Regional Centre, Mohali. Her areas of research are corporate financial management, financial economics and behavioral finance. She has published more than 30 research papers in various National/International conferences/Journals of repute. She is actively involved in updating her research skills and serving on editorial board of various reputed international Journals. She is also taking active participation in department’s placement and cultural activities. Currently six students are pursuing Ph. D under her guidance. Dr. Ravi Singla is Assistant Professor at University School of Applied Management, Punjabi University Patiala. He did his Ph. D. from this university in the area of Asset Pricing. He has qualified the UGC-NET exam, both in the disciplines of Commerce and Management. He has more than 17 years teaching experience in the field of Accounting & Finance and Management. Dr. Ravi has been with Punjabi University for six years. Before joining university he worked at Modi College, Patiala and Gian Jyoti Institute of Management & Technology, Mohali. In his current position, he teaches courses in Financial Markets. His research areas of interest are Corporate Finance, Capital Markets and Portfolio Management. He has several research publications to his credit in national and international reputed journals. Dr. Ravi has also presented many research papers in national and international seminars and conferences. One student is awarded Ph. Dr. Nimarta Mann is presently working as an Assistant Professor in the University School of Applied Management after having attained her Doctorate in Human Resource Management in 2012 from Punjabi University. Her major field of specialization is Banking, Finance & HRM, and minor is E-Business, having attained her M.Com(E-Com.) (specialization banking and finance) from University Business School, Panjab University Chandigarh. She has published a book titled, “Stress Management- A Key to Improved Workplace Attitude”, Regal Publications in 2013, besides having published numerous research papers to her credit in journals of national and international repute. She has also presented several papers in International Conferences. She is actively involved in further research in human resource and other facets of management. Dr. Harsimran Kaur is presently working as Assistant Professor in the University School of Applied Management. She has done her masters in Management from Punjabi University, Patiala. Her area of specialisation is finance. She completed her Ph. D from School of Management Studies, Punjabi University Patiala in 2014. Dr. Sulakshna Dwivedi, currently Assistant Professor at University School of Applied Management, Punjabi University, Patiala. An Alumna of University Business School, Panjab University., Ph.D. ,M.B.A.(Hons.) with specialisation in Human Resource Management, and Diploma in Training and Development from Indian Society for Training and Development (ISTD), New Delhi. She qualified the UGC-NET (National Eligibility Test) thrice and was Senior Research Fellow at UBS, Panjab University, Chandigarh.  She started her career by serving a pharmaceutical company as Personnel Officer in 2002 and after a stint of two years she switched to academics and joined Rayat Institute of Management. She has to her credit corporate, teaching and research experience of ten years. She has successfully qualified Screening test for the post of Management Trainee in National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) in the year 2005.Her areas of interests are Human Resources, Organizational Behaviour, Training and Development and Organizational Development. She has published many research papers in national/international journals and conferences including Vikalpa, Indian Journal of Industrial relations (IJIR), International Journal of Indian Culture and Business Management, Panjab University Research Journal (Social Science), etc. She has authored a book entitled, “Attrition in Indian BPO Sector - A Conceptual Study (ISBN: 978-3-659-51059-5). Bandhanpreet Kaur working as Assistant Professor in Human Resources in the University School of Applied Management. Before joining the department she worked with various organizations in the Corporate and Education sector. She has over 6 years of experience. She has been instrumental in organizing various seminars and conferences in her previous assignments. Currently she is pursuing her Doctorate in the field of Human Resources. She has published papers on diverse topics related to Human Resource Management. She has keen interest in areas such as Job satisfaction, Quality of Work Life and Turnover Intentions.
