Department History

The Department of Psychology of Punjabi University , Patiala was established in 1987, during the Silver Jubilee year of the University. The strength of the teaching staff is two Professors, two Readers, ten Lecturers, two Senior Technical Assistants, three Junior Technical Assistants as well as other supporting staff.

Presently intake of the students in M.Sc-I, and M. Sc-II is 60 each. In P. G. Diploma in Counselling Psychology intake of the students is 16. The M. Phil course has 15 seats. The department also provides research facilities like Ph.D degree in the thrust areas of the Personality, Creativity, Clinical Psychology, Organizational Behaviour, Experimental and Social Psychology, Educational Psychology, Sports Psychology, Counselling Psychology, Cross-Cultural Psychology and so on. The faculty members of the department have produced high quality of research work which has been extensively published in Foreign and Indian Journals.

The Department is well-equipped with psychological tests and instruments. It has three laboratories, namely, Experimental Lab., Testing Lab. and Bio-feed back Lab. In addition, there is a Nodal-Computer Lab. which facilitates research and other Departmental activities. The Department invites many experts of National and International repute for giving extension lectures on a Spectrum of Themes.

The Department is providing Counselling Services to the Students and Employees of the University to Cope with Stress and Enhancing their Psychological Wellbeing. The Department has completed two Fruitful Decades of its existence and is continuing its endeavor towards academic excellence in teaching, research and Counseling activities.

A) Lab. Utility:

1. Psychometric Laboratory: Has a large store of standardized psychological tests used for the assessment of various facets of personality.

2. Experimental Laboratory: Has a wide variety of Psychological apparatus used for the measurement and understanding of psycho-physical attributes.

3. Biofeedback Laboratory: Houses Polygraphs (Lie-Detector), EMG, EEG, Apparatus for detection of changes in various physiological indices.

B) Library Services:

The department has a contributory library that has a large collection of books in various fields of psychology catering to the needs of students, research fellows and faculty in the department.

C) Computer/Internet Facilities:

The department has a computer Lab providing online services to students, research fellows and faculty for research purposes.

         • Child Guidance Clinics-As Counselors in Family Resource Centers, Child Care Centers, School Counselling.
