The establishment of Punjabi University Regional Centre at Bathinda in 1984 was a landmark in the history of this educationally backward region of Punjab, known as Malwa. Bathinda, popularly called the heart of Malwa, was the most suitable place for the establishment of Post-Graduate centre of learning as it is located almost in the centre of this region. The Post Graduate department of the Regional Centre of the Punjabi University Patiala is a multi-faculty department. At present the following courses are being run under this department:
The total area of the Regional Centre is 20 canals i.e. 12100 Sq. Meters. The building has sufficient accommodation and more rooms are added into it for the facilities of teachers and students. The students of the Centre have the distinction of maintaining high academic standards by getting merit positions in the university examinations. They also actively participate in the cultural activities. The students often get first or second positions in the Zonal Youth Festivals organised by the university from year to year. The N.S.S. unit has been functioning in the department since 1984. Camps are organised under this programme to channelise the energy of the young people. Through camps public awareness is created among the community on various social problems such as Dowry System, Environmental Pollution, Illiteracy, Adult Education, AIDS, etc.
The teaching faculty of the Centre has been engaged in evolving new and innovative techniques in teaching. Apart from teaching it is also earnest in research and creative work. The centre is proud of Prof. Gurdial Singh who was a prominent teacher and served this institution for many years. He is the renowned novelist of Punjabi literature and has been honoured with prestigious awards like Padam Shri, Sahit Academy Award, Soviet Land Nehru Award, Best Fiction Book Award, Shiromani Sahitkar Award, etc.
The teachers of the department are proficient in both teaching and research activities. Besides there teaching workload, the teachers of the department undertakes research projects, contribute to the research journals and guide M.Phil. and Ph.D students.
