On Oct. 7 1965 the department started as a Translation Department. The purpose was to translate the classical books of education in Punjabi. One reader, Head and two lecturers were employed. Their qualifications were the same as prescribed for the teachers of Teachers Colleges. They translated 12 standard books mostly by foreign authors including books by Panten, Ryburn, Sorenson. After two years, the department was renamed as department of Education & Research and it was assigned the task of undertaking investigations and experimentation in the field of teaching of languages particularly Punjabi.
In 1970, it was converted into a full-fledged teaching department with Dr. T.R. Sharma as Head of the Department and a two year M.A. course in Education was initiated . In year 1975 them. Phil Course was started which continued up to 1992. One major function of the department was Adult literacy and production of literature for the Neo literates besides the extension education. During the span of 46 years, the department was able to produce standard books language for all papers and courses at the B.A. three year degree course, B.Ed, M.Ed and M.A. (Education). Not less than 50 books were either got written originally or translated.
The department restarted M.Phil. (Education) from the session 2008-09.A centre for Adult and Continuing Education is being run by the department with the approval of UGC.
Students of M.Ed and M.A. Education of the department are placed as lecturers in the various B.Ed Colleges of Punjab. Students of the department get jobs in B.Ed colleges and govt. jobs at school level as well.
Old students of the department are members of Punjabi University Alumni Association.
