Department History
Date of Establishment of the Department :1965
The Department of Education and Community Service was started as a translation department on October 7, 1965 with a purpose to translate the classical books of education in Punjabi. The Department has translated 12 standard books mostly by foreign authors.
In 1970, it was converted into a full-fledged teaching department and two year M.A. (Education) course was started. In the year 1975, the M.Phil. (Education) course was started which continued up to 1992 and was started again from the session 2008-09. One year M.Ed. course was also started in the department from the session 2005-06, which is of two years duration since 2015-16. During the span of 50 years the department has been able to produce standard books on education in Punjabi language for all the courses i.e. B.A. (Education) three years degree course, B.Ed., M.Ed., M.A. (Education) and M.Phil. (Education) as well as for priority areas in education and allied disciplines. The department has the privilege of organizing International and National conferences, seminars, refresher courses, summer institutes and workshops. These academic programmes have been essentially in the priority areas such as universalization of school education, quality assurance in higher education, skill development including life skills, socio-psychological factors determining participation and learning outcomes of students, especially those from socio-economically disadvantaged sections of the society.
The department has made a laudable contribution in celebration of events related to education such as International Women’s Day, International Literacy Day, and Teachers’ Day etc. It has brought two books consisting of abstracts of researches conducted in the department from time to time since 1970. The department faculty is actively engaged in national and international research paper publication. Till now, 180 M.Phil. Dissertations and 250 Ph.D. theses have been guided by the faculty in the department. Presently, 142 Ph.D. scholars are registered in the department. The department has a psychology lab, two computer labs and a departmental library also.
The department organized Seminar on ‘Universalization of Elementary Education’ on May 20, 2004. In December 2005, an international Conference was being organized on ‘GATS and Education’. In November 2010, national seminar was held on the theme of ‘Role of Teachers in National Integration and Communal Harmony’. A session on the theme Women & Education was chaired in an international conference by Women Study Centre in February 2011. A three day workshop on Research Methodology in Education was organized in March 2011. Department has organized a refresher course in 2002 with the association of UGC and two refresher courses were organized with the association of Academic Staff College in 2009 & 2011.
The faculty of Department of Education and Community Service has been granted major and minor research projects by different funding agencies such as UGC, Ministry of Education, and other sponsoring organizations. The department conducted Faculty Development Programmes for professional development of college and university teachers and teacher educators on pedagogical innovations and new research methodologies to enhance learning outcomes- a goal of excellence in higher education. The faculty of the department is also working on the research projects with national and international collaboration.
The department started the Four year-Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) B.A. B.Ed. (Secondary stage) with the approval of National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), New Delhi from the session 2024-25. ITEP is a four-year integrated degree programme being offered at the tertiary level aiming at preparing teachers for the secondary stage as per the new school structure recommended by NEP, 2020. With the vision of enabling young and aspiring adults to become competent teachers, this programme aims to transform the landscape of teacher preparation across the country.
The faculty of the department is engaged in international collaborative SPARC project funded by Ministry of Education, Government of India. The department organized an ICSSR sponsored International Conference on the theme, “Science, Mathematics, Technology and Education- Making and Shaping the Future” in collaboration with STEM Group, School of Education, Curtin University, Perth (Australia) from November 27-29, 2024.
With the above achievements, department will continue to give its contribution in the field of education & development.

The Department conducts researches in the major thurst areas of education.
The Department Organizes refresher Courses, Seminar and conferences according to the recent development in the field of education.
The faculty of the department acts as recourse person and presents papers at various national and international conferences in India and abroad.
The centre for adult and continuing education of the department organizes adult literacy classes for Punjabi language for the class IV employees of Punjabi University, Patiala.
Placements
Students of M.Ed and M.A. Education of the department are placed as lecturers in the various B.Ed Colleges of Punjab. Students of the department get jobs in B.Ed colleges and govt. jobs at school level as well.
