Punjabi University, Patiala is a multi-faculty institution of higher education in India dedicated to the all-round promotion of Punjabi Language, Literature and Culture. It is the first in the world to introduce Sikh Sacred Music as a subject in the Faculty of Arts & Culture. Gurmat Sangeet as an independent academic discipline has been introduced to create awareness and spread the knowledge and essence of Sikh Sacred Music among people of diverse cultures.
To achieve this objective, this University has initiated a comprehensive Gurmat Sangeet Project to enable people to acquire academic excellence and revive this unique musical tradition of Punjab. Initially, Gurmat Sangeet Chair was established in 2003 for the promotion, propagation and preservation of Gurmat Sangeet as a school of music. After the Chair gained world-wide appreciation, the University authorities also established a teaching Department of Gurmat Sangeet on the eve of 400th Parkash Utsav of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
